CE: The Sleep-World is in trouble

In this drawing is featuring Mr. Stairway. He's a humanoid being of the Sleep-World.

- Now comes the creative and maybe non-canon part, hehe-

After reading the plot description that Eeren gave us, I imagine the sleep-world as a dimensional world, where are too many dimensions where people are allowed to rest while sleeping. But there starting to be a lot of dreams that only contain despair and anger, instead of hope and faith. Here we see Mr. Stairway 'patrolling' the dimensions, and luckily, he found a dimension where the nightmares (red ones) were unstable and fighting against the good dreams (white ones). About the shiny thing that is far away him, it is a portal. Crossing it allows the user to teleport to any other dimension inside the Sleep-World. The reason his hand is in that pose, is because he is controlling the portal with the hand, making it shiner so he may be able to see what's happening. That specific dimension is very dark indeed, that's why he needs  the portal to see. 

That is how I see the things happening in the Sleep-World.
